"Life is difficult," writes M Scott Peck in his classic book, The Road Less Traveled. That simple three-word statement is profound in its very simplicity. It is especially true in this time of turmoil, political divisions, pandemic, isolation because of a microscopic virus, and the countless other things that grab the headlines. No matter how we look at it, the indisputable fact is that life is, indeed, difficult.
During this past year, the year of Covid-19, we have faced things that before this year, would have been unthinkable. We have redefined ourselves and our role in society. We live in a masked-up world, emphasized by social distancing, which, for many, has brought about a crushing, imposed sense of isolation that has proven to be devastating. We have been isolated not only from one another but from the once normal things that made up our lives that we once took for granted. Stress levels have risen to nearly intolerable levels and, tragically, for some, the resulting stress has been too much. Many chose to end their own lives in desolation and desperation.
Through it all, many have come to the awareness that we do, indeed, need one another. We need one another not only for companionship but for the kind of support that affirms and guides us through our days. Many are lonely and discouraged because, by nature, we need one another. We need to be in the presence of each other to feel human.
With the introduction of the vaccine to combat this virus, the prospect of returning to "normal" is a reality. And, yet, what is "normal"? In many ways, we cannot return to "normal." We can go through the motions, but we have all been fundamentally changed through our experiences that have played out over the past year. We now look at the world through a filter of sickness and death that none of us have ever experienced on the scale of a worldwide pandemic. Ironically, by living through the disease, so many have come to define themselves by the disease. And we are so much more than that!
We live in a world filled with wonders and natural beauty that we have somehow forgotten throughout this year of isolation. We are alive in a wonderful way because there are people in our lives who truly love us and want only the best for us. Love is still very much alive as is evidenced by the army of people, volunteers, and professionals, who have come together to help the sick and the dying as well as give comfort to the families who have lost loved ones.
Many are isolated through other means. Broken relationships failed dreams and hopes, and disappointments in people or the direction in which their path has taken them, continue to make life bleak for so many. These are all Matters of the Heart.
Matters of the Heart is a new resource designed to help you clarify where you are in life and where you want to be. You will find a welcoming atmosphere and a non-judgmental experience that will help you move forward in your life.
Matters of the Heart is a place where you can come to take a break from life, if only for a few minutes. It is a place of hope, inspiration, and encouragement. All too often some are more than willing to tell us just exactly where we are wrong or mistaken and do not lend the kind of support, we all yearn for. So often, as we go about our business, we sometimes barely notice others in our life. Others become a blur in our consciousness.
Matters of the Heart is a place to which you can come to reconnect not only with yourself but be reminded of the importance of others in your life. We often hear complaints about how rude people are or how indifferent the world has become. That's because we have forgotten to look at one another as persons, not just people that we must tolerate. The guy in the grocery line, the elderly woman at the pharmacy, the mother with three screaming children can all be sources of irritation to us. Yet, they are one of us. They are no different from us. They have their wants, desires, needs, and hopes. They are doing their best, at times, struggling with things we can't imagine.
Matters of the Heart will hopefully remind you to take a moment and pause from the rigors of daily living. Pause for a moment and read the latest post. These posts will vary from inspirational to encouraging to comforting. It is intended to be a place of peace.
